The Perfect Reference Photo Guide
To capture the "heart and soul" of a pet, the artist needs to see exactly what makes them special. Since I’ll be working from your photos, the quality of the reference is the most important step in creating a lifelike portrait.
Here is a guide to help you choose or take the perfect photo of your fur child.
1. Lighting is Everything
The Best: Natural, indirect sunlight. Aim to take the photo outdoors on an overcast day or indoors near a large window.
Avoid: Using a flash (which causes "red-eye" or flat features) or harsh, direct midday sun which creates deep, dark shadows.
2. Get Down on Their Level
The Best: Crouch or lie down so the camera is at eye level with your pet. This creates a much more intimate and soulful connection in the drawing.
Avoid: Taking photos from above while they are looking up. This can distort their proportions and hide their neck and chest.
3. Focus on the Eyes
The Best: Ensure the eyes are sharp and in focus. "The eyes are the window to the soul," and they are the most important part of the portrait.
Tip: If you can see the tiny reflection of light (the "catchlight") in their eyes, it’s a perfect shot!
4. Capture the Details
The Best: A high-resolution photo where I can zoom in and see the direction of the fur, the texture of the nose, and the individual whiskers.
Tip: If your pet is dark-furred, natural light is even more vital so I can distinguish their features from their coat.
5. Personality Counts
Does your pet always have their tongue out? A specific "guilty" look? Or a regal, stoic stare? Choose the photo that best represents their unique character.
A Helpful Checklist
[ ] Close-up: Is the pet's head taking up most of the frame?
[ ] True Color: Does the fur color in the photo look like it does in real life?
[ ] Uncluttered: Is their face clear of toys or blankets (unless you want those in the drawing)?
Note: If you are commissioning a memorial piece and only have a few older photos, please send them through! I am experienced at working with limited references to piece together a beautiful likeness.
